Apparently you must have a BMI of around 18. I think mine’s currently around 18-20 so I pass! I think this is a good move despite the possibility for discrimination (some people are just naturally v. skinny), maybe if you are naturally v. slim or have Asian heritage, you can get a doctor’s certificate okaying you despite your lower BMI.

Cathy Gould (Elite): “what about discrimination against the model”?
What about modelling’s discrimination against fat or ugly women, or those over 17?

What about it?

Seriously, that is a good point, but it’s not even the fat and ugly that they discrimate again, it’s the normal and attractive (just not freaks of nature tall and skinny). Apparently there were sniggers when normal (but attractive) people were used in a recent Australian fashion show.

Still, I think we need to differentiate between those who are naturally gawky and those who are putting their health at risk. I don’t like the idea that because you are skinny you must equal an anorexic. It really is just as oppressive as the body fat=bad stuff for that skinny person’s self esteem. We really should be appreciated and using in the press a wide spectrum of body shapes rather than focussing on just one ideal be it skinny or fat.
